Listening activity; ages 4+

Kai dances a solo (when someone dances alone) to a piece of music called The Flight of the Bumblebee by the composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

Can you imagine or create some movement that would match this music?

1. Listen to the music and choose some words to describe what you hear. (We’ve put down some of our ideas to get you started!)

Fast, Slow, Loud, Quiet, Sharp, Gentle, Light, Heavy, Long, Short...

2. Think about the music words you chose, and imagine what type of movements might go with them.

Big, Small, Slow, Fast, Smooth, Sharp, Energetic, Calm, High, Low...

3. Watch Kai’s solo (you can watch this on BBC iPlayer from 26:07 - 27:38) and see which of the words you’ve chosen best describe his dancing - are there any surprises?

Now make your own solo dance for The Flight of The Bumblebee using your words, the music and the ballet to inspire you.
