The telephone. The television. Dolly the Sheep. Scotland has always been at the forefront of new technology, changing the course of history. This year, Scottish Ballet is changing the course of dance in a world first, a distinctive new version of the classical ballet, Coppélia — crafted by Scotland.

It’s been 30 years since Scottish Ballet first toured Coppélia. The original ballet, based on 19th century automata, was radical for its time. Now, in this fourth ballet of our ambitious Five in Five Campaign to create five new full length works in five years, we are carrying Coppélia’s spirit into the 21st century.

Scottish Ballet’s new Coppélia will blend location and real-time filming with projection and live performance in ways that will immerse you in a world of fantasy and hyper-reality. Directed and choreographed by Morgann Runacre-Temple and Jessica Wright (The Secret Theatre, Tremble), this version of Coppélia is so revolutionary that its blended multiple artforms requires one of the largest creative teams Scottish Ballet has ever assembled including projection and video directors, designers, dramaturgy, and written text specialists.

Help us to create a ballet for the future by donating to support this new approach to the ballet's theatricality.

You’ve already supported us through one of the most challenging times in the company’s history. Through the lockdowns, Scottish Ballet changed and adapted, as we all did. The pandemic accelerated Scottish Ballet’s expertise on screen and we have 14 new dance films to show for it. We want to drive that knowledge to the stage and expand on it. Dancers will perform live alongside a playful use of cameras to explore our relationship with reality, creating a unique experience for a live theatre audience.

Your donation towards the commission of Coppélia will have a direct impact on the future of ballet, funding the large creative team and complex design elements. Help Scotland lead the way.

Coppélia will be the fourth production in Scottish Ballet’s Five in Five Campaign to create five new ballets in five years, touring theatres in autumn 2022.
