We're delighted to invite P6 and/or P7 staff and pupils to take part in our first ever digital Safe to Be Me™ festival 2021.

Scottish Ballet’s Safe to Be Me™ project supports young people to feel safe and confident in who they are. During the varied digital festival programme, young people will explore concepts such as homophobia, racism, ableism, transphobia, bigotry and family diversity (addressing key Scottish Government targets).

We would like to offer schools who took part in previous STBM™ tours this digital opportunity free of charge. The 60-minute online dance workshops and talks will be delivered to pupils in classrooms. They will explore the themes of identity, acceptance and respect through creative, interactive experiences.

Schools can choose one or more of the following workshops:

Family Diversity Workshops

Beginning with a dance solo performed by one of Scottish Ballet's experienced dance artists, this 75-minute workshop will consist of a warm-up and creative activities exploring family diversity.

Our experienced dance practitioner will take pupils on a fun narrative journey through various dance tasks. A facilitated discussion will explore a dynamic range of family make-ups including fostering, adoption, multiple heritage backgrounds, same-sex couples and single parenthood.

This discussion is then used as creative inspiration for movement-based tasks.

Gender Identity through Poetry and Dance

Beginning with a solo performed by one of Scottish Ballet's experienced artists, this 75-minute workshop will consist of a warm-up and creative activities focusing on personal and gender identity.

This workshop includes a combination of poetry exercises and tasks facilitated by experienced dance and literary practitioners. Through exploring the concept of identity labels, participants will learn terminology, be empowered to take ownership of their own identity and feel encouraged to practice allyship – supporting others to feel safe in who they are.

Participants then learn specially created choreography and have the opportunity/chance to create their own movement in response.

Inspirational Talks

Safe to Be Me™ is about exploring identity and empowering all young people to feel safe and confident in who they are. These inspirational talks provide a platform for young people to hear from a variety of role models in our industry.

Speakers will discuss their experiences and journeys through training, professional dance and other areas of the industry. The talks will include topics such as – maintaining motivation, what ignites their creative passion, and challenges they might encounter along the way. Young people will hear from professionals from a range of backgrounds with successful careers in the dance sector.
