A hypnotic fusion of sound & movement.
Scottish Ballet’s Autumn Season is a multi-sensory experience; a double-bill from internationally acclaimed choreographer, Crystal Pite, and Scottish Ballet’s emerging choreographic talent, Sophie Laplane.
A riveting, dark-hued work that casts a swarming, scurrying group of dancers, insect-like, in an eerie universe; Emergence presents the full company on stage creating spectacular formations and is set to a hypnotic electronic score by Owen Belton.
It won four Dora Mavor Moore Awards for Outstanding Production, Outstanding New Choreography, Outstanding Performance and Outstanding Sound Design/Composition by Owen Belton.
‘"Pite is an image-maker of rare distinction."’
The Australian
Sophie Laplane’s singular style mixes humour with inspiration from everyday emotions and situations. With original music by Alex Menzies aka Alex Smoke, Sibilo demonstrates Laplane’s joyful and unrestricted style in a celebration of the power and versatility of dancers’ bodies and of movement in all its forms.
Scottish Ballet would like to extend sincere thanks to Sir Sandy and Lady Crombie, theMcGlashan Charitable Trust and the Turtleton Trust for supporting Sophie Laplane’s Sibilo.
‘"Laplane is clearly a major talent in the making."’
Sunday Herald
Christopher Hampson, Scottish Ballet’s Artistic Director, has worked closely with Laplane over the past few years, nurturing her remarkable natural choreographic talent and giving her platforms to show her work. Sophie Laplane's first full-scale work Maze was premiered during Autumn Season 2015. Maze was also the inspiration for a short film by Eve McConnachie, shot in Govanhill Baths and featuring dancers Javier Andreu and Madeline Squire.
‘"[Alex Smoke and I] started thinking about 'Sibilo', which means 'whistle' in Latin, and whistling became a running theme throughout the whole piece." ’
Sophie Laplane
Sophie Laplane has collaborated with Scottish electronic DJ and music producer and DJ Alex Menzies (aka Alex Smoke) to create an original musical composition for her world premiere, Sibilo.
