I’ve never danced before; do you need to have any previous dance experience to attend a class?

Our Absolute Beginners ballet class and Regenerate class are for those with no prior ballet experience. For all other classes, some experience is required and this is outlined in each of the class descriptions.

Can I join an online class at any time?

For all our online classes, you need to book for the full term and join at the beginning of term. All classes are subject to availability and may sell out.

Please note, if you can’t make the first three classes of a course then we suggest you wait and book for the next available term.

Do you offer discounts?

We receive no funding to run these classes, so we charge a flat fee of £11 per class and £7.50 per week for the Regenerate class.  There are no concessions or discounts for booking multiple classes.

Are classes paid weekly or by term?

All online classes need to be paid in full at the time of booking.

Can I have a refund?

We offer limited refunds for online classes depending on how far in advance you cancel your booking. An administration charge is retained. The full refund policy can be found in our terms and conditions.

If I have an injury/illness – can I still participate?

If you have any health issues, we advise you to consult your GP before starting any form of exercise.  When you book for one of our online classes, we will require you to provide some details about your health. Participants take classes at their own risk. We may require a doctor’s confirmation that your participation is approved.

How old is everyone in the class?

Our adult classes are for people aged 16+ and participants’ ages vary greatly across all the classes. There is no upper age limit. Our SB Young Dancer’s class is for those aged 10-14 only.

Are you allowed to take photos or film during the online class?

No filming, photography or recording is permitted in any of the classes, except with prior permission from Scottish Ballet.

Is it strictly ballet in the online classes?

Yes, in our ballet technique classes we teach classical technique only, however we teach contemporary techniques in our Dance for Parkinson’s, Time to Dance and Elevate classes.

Are your online classes linked with the company?

Several of the classes are taught by Scottish Ballet dancers. Sometimes teachers will take inspiration from Scottish Ballet’s current repertoire.

Do classes work towards examinations?

No. Classes at Scottish Ballet will cover technique and creativity in varying degrees but are not syllabus-based or intended to prepare you for ballet grade exams.

Who are the teachers?

All our teachers are a mix of former and current professional dancers.  They are highly experienced and trained to teach dance safely.

Is there a waiting list for the online classes that are fully booked?

No, we do not hold waiting lists for our online classes. Sometimes spaces become available in sold-out classes, and we generally share this on social media or in emails to our members.

Do the online classes have live music?

Yes, all classes have either a live pianist or a percussionist. If the Covid-19 situation in Scotland changes and staff have to return to working from home then recorded music may be used.

Do I need to bring my booking confirmation with me?

There is no need to bring your email confirmation; once you have booked your name will be added to a register. Please make sure that the name you register with matches your Zoom account name.

Can I transfer to a different  online class if I’m finding the one I’m in too challenging/not challenging enough?

If there are places available you will be able to transfer into another online class, however this may not always be the case. Please contact classes@scottishballet.co.uk to enquire. Classes are booked under your own responsibility and it is not a requirement for Scottish Ballet to transfer classes. Please note there is a £5 administration charge to transfer classes.

Where do the online classes take place?

All classes take place on Zoom. Details of how to join your class will be emailed to you in advance of the start date.

What should I wear at class?

Comfortable clothing, that you can easily move around in. You can dance in ballet shoes or bare feet, appropriate to the type of flooring you are dancing on. We recommend that long hair be tied up.

What if I'm running late?

We ask that you are ready to join the class and start on time. We do not admit anyone who is more than 15 minutes late.

How many participants are in the class?

The number of participants varies depending on class level.

Do you cater for anyone with special needs?

Yes, we aim to provide classes which are accessible to all. We require information regarding the type of disability you have so that we can arrange personal support if required. We will try our best to provide a positive learning environment for everyone.
