Preparation often begins hours before the curtain goes up, often in a flurry of excitement. Soloist Araminta Wraith applies her makeup in a rare moment of quiet before the show.
Busy changing rooms mean thinking creatively about mirror space. In this dressing room, Soloist Thomas Edwards squeezes into a mirror on the wall to apply his clown make-up backstage.
Every dancer has their own unique ritual when it comes to preparing their pointe shoes for a performance. Principal Constance Devernay chooses which pair to wear for the performance and tapes the ribbons in place. She'll then sew them in after a quick change during the first act of The Snow Queen.

Last minute adjustments and costume fastenings often need a helping hand. Here, Principal Bethany Kingsley-Garner relies on an all important dresser to assist before taking the stage.
It's not just about hair and make-up! Artist Alice Kawalek takes her second costume to the wings in anticipation of a quick change. Preparing this ahead of the performance allows for peace of mind in the final minutes before curtain up.

During the interval
With curtain down for the interval, the dancers quickly head back to their dressing rooms to get changed for act two. Almost all of the cast dance multiple roles in The Snow Queen meaning their 20-minute break goes very quickly.
During interval, Artist Jerome Anthony Barnes secures his wig cap to ensure that once the wig is on, it doesn't move during the lively opening of act two.
A quick touch up. Soloist Grace Horler adds the finishing touches to her makeup before heading to the wings for act two.
Interval is also a chance to practice any sticky points in the choreography or rehearse something with a partner. This photo was taken moments before Principal Christopher Harrison's debut in the role of Lead Bandit.
While some dancers prepare quietly, others share a laugh and compare fake moustaches. First Artist Rimbaud Patron chats to Soloist Bruno Micchiardi as they head towards the stage for act two.

After the show
After the curtain comes down, the dancers head backstage to wind down and get ready for the next show, which often might be just a few hours later. Artists Simon Schilgen and Amy McEntee share a laugh after the curtain call of The Snow Queen on their way back to the dressing rooms.
Following the performance, the artistic team give corrections to the company. Here, First Artists Jerome Anthony Barnes and Constant Vigier receive feedback from Rehearsal Assistant Tamarin Stott before its time to do it all over again for another audience.
