Audio Description and Touch Tours
Enhancing performances for the vision impaired.
We offer audio-described performances at a specially discounted price, and free touch tours, for our vision-impaired patrons. Their guest at that performance is also entitled to the same discounted ticket price.
AD audience members are provided with headsets and theatre staff are on hand to help with these as necessary.
These performances are described by members of Scottish Ballet staff or regular, very experienced freelancers. (Details of who is describing which production will be mentioned on that production’s webpage.) All our describers have a deep understanding of Scottish Ballet and provide the highest quality descriptions for our audiences. AD audience members don’t need any existing knowledge of ballet to enjoy to the experience as, when they’re used, they are explained.
The live commentary describes the set and costumes, the atmosphere, characters and action on stage whilst allowing enough space to enjoy and appreciate the music played by the orchestra of Scottish Ballet.
In advance of the production, an audio recording of the synopsis will be available on our website. At 1.00pm, on the day of the performance, the touch tour offers our AD audience members the chance to get up close to a selection of costumes and props and to hear more about the dancers, the characters they are playing and some examples of gestures and movements specific to the performance. The describers start with an introduction about 2.20pm, setting the scene for Act I before the curtain goes up at 2.30pm.
Tickets can be booked via the theatre box offices by telephone or in-person. Please let them know you will require a headset when booking your audio seats and they can advise you of the best seats in the house for reception.
Cast lists and programme articles are also available in braille or large print on request. Please contact Lorna Murray on 0141 331 6285 or email engagement@scottishballet.co.uk.
