Our commitment to the health and fitness of our dancers

Scottish Ballet's dancers are amongst the finest athletes in Scotland. The quality of the performance you see on stage is a testimony to the hard work and commitment of the dancers and the ballet team that supports them.

The Company is making a considerable investment in the health and fitness of all our dancers and is establishing an on-going commitment to dancer welfare.

Alongside the Gyrotonic® system we provide a multi-gym facility and a therapeutic massage facility operated by Fraser Johnstone. Fraser treats dancers with different massage techniques and is developing a massage programme exclusively for the needs of the Scottish Ballet dancers.

The dancers are also currently receiving advice on healthy living both at work and at home. This includes a diet review and improvements to the menu available at the canteen at the Company's studios.

Gyrotonic® Expansion System

physical training

The Art of Exercising and Beyond

The Gyrotonic® Expansion System produces toned lean and flexible muscles. Joint mobility and the range of motion increases as the System simultaneously stretches and strengthens the body with minimal effort. With a better functioning neuromuscular musculoskeletal and cardiovascular system you will enhance your quality of life and your fitness.

Scottish Ballet was the first organisation in Scotland to install the Gyrotonic® Expansion System which incorporates elements of yoga dance swimming and martial arts.

The work has proved particularly beneficial to the dancers of the Company assisting in injury prevention and rehabilitation. Particular emphasis is placed on physical alignment. Therefore the work helps anyone suffering from back pain or other joint problems as it improves muscular imbalances and realigns the skeletal structure.

The Gyrotonic® Expansion System is managed by former Scottish Ballet dancer Kathleen Menzies. For more information or to book a private session to experience Gyrotonic® for yourself click here.

Penny Withers, Head of Scottish Ballet's Associate Programme also has her own studio. For more information click here.
