Peter Darrell: Scotland's Dance Pioneer

Peter Darrell was already a successful and ground-breaking choreographer when he became the first artistic director of Scottish Ballet in 1969. The first choreographer to set dance to the music of The Beatles and one of the first to create a ballet especially for British television – Peter Darrell also discovered Michael Clark and inspired Matthew Bourne, who both pay tribute to him in this special documentary to coincide with the 25th anniversary of his death.  The documentary ends with a fresh staging of his pas de deux for Cheri featuring Scottish Ballet's Claire Robertson and Owen Thorne.

Originally aired on BBC 2 in December the documentary is being screened at Glasgow's Film Theatre as part of the Glasgow Film Festival. Footage of Darrell’s work Mods and Rockers (1964, 25 mins) and Houseparty (1964, 30 mins), an experimental ballet for BBC2 based on Francis Poulenc’s score for Les Biches will also be screened.

Visit the Glasgow Film Festival website for more information.
