Dancers' health and wellbeing

Information on how dancers look after their bodies

A dancer must possess a fine balance of aesthetic, artistic and physiological skills and talents as they need to be able to express themselves through the traditional technique of ballet with the strength and endurance of an athlete.  stretchcrop

Over the years, ballet training has become more virtuosic and as a result dancers have been required to take advantage of some of the scientific advances and technology developed to support athletes. 

Dancers have benefited from the information and support dance science provides. Studies such as Dance UK’s Fit to Dance 1 and 2 [1] have shown that implementing recommended changes to their environment, training and health improves the quality and duration of a dancer’s performing life.   

Specialists working with dancers to support their artistic and physical training must have a good understanding of dancers’ needs and priorities and will work with them in a practical and supportive way to achieve all of the intended aims.

To work and train as a dancer you must consider the following areas:

Nutrition

Dancers must maintain a well-balanced diet to suit their own specific needs. Foods that provide energy and stamina over a long period are better than those offering a quick boost. They also need to drink plenty of water to keep their bodies properly hydrated.

Support for your training

A dancer’s teacher will tell them the best methods alternative for improving and maintaining their technique, for instance either Pilates, Gyrotonics or resistance training.

Injury prevention

Dancers must not over do it as they are more susceptible to injury when they are tired, thirsty, hungry or generally under par.  A clean, well-sprung dance studio with good natural light and ventilation is an environment which will contribute positively to a dancers’ health.

Quality of teaching

Dance students should always work with an accredited teacher. Students should know where they trained, how many years they have been teaching and what syllabus they teach. A good teacher will consider the needs of each individual student and will help them achieve their potential through planned development activities. Every teacher who works with young people should have an up to date disclosure, professional insurance and be teaching in a premises suitable for dance.

Appropriate clothing

Dancers should ensure clothing and footwear is a good fit and appropriate for the style of dance being practiced.
