A dancer must possess a fine balance of aesthetic, artistic and physiological skills and talents as they need to be able to express themselves through the traditional technique of ballet with the strength and endurance of an athlete.

Dancers must maintain a well-balanced diet to suit their own specific needs. Foods that provide energy and stamina over a long period are better than those offering a quick boost. They also need to drink plenty of water to keep their bodies properly hydrated.
A dancer’s teacher will tell them the best methods alternative for improving and maintaining their technique, for instance either Pilates, Gyrotonics or resistance training.
Dancers must not over do it as they are more susceptible to injury when they are tired, thirsty, hungry or generally under par. A clean, well-sprung dance studio with good natural light and ventilation is an environment which will contribute positively to a dancers’ health.
Dance students should always work with an accredited teacher. Students should know where they trained, how many years they have been teaching and what syllabus they teach. A good teacher will consider the needs of each individual student and will help them achieve their potential through planned development activities. Every teacher who works with young people should have an up to date disclosure, professional insurance and be teaching in a premises suitable for dance.
Dancers should ensure clothing and footwear is a good fit and appropriate for the style of dance being practiced.
