Cinderella Audio Description

“It was really excellent.  Unlike plays or films, there is nothing else to support your idea of what is going on on stage other than the description, and the audio describers did a fantastic job.”

Insight, March 2007

In 1998, Scottish Ballet became the first dance company in Europe to provide live audio description for visually impaired patrons. Since then, the Company has consistently provided described performances and Touch Tours for narrative productions in venues throughout Scotland and the United Kingdom. An audio flyer (CD) is mailed out and from this, patrons can then book and receive a second CD containing a brief synopsis of the ballet and detailed descriptions of characters, costumes and set. Cast lists and programme articles are also available in Braille or large print on request.

Prior to the described performance, a Touch Tour is offered: patrons gather in the stalls and have the opportunity to get up close to a selection of costumes and props as well as to ask questions about the production and learn some of the dance vocabulary which is used in the live description. The Touch Tour also gives the describers a chance to introduce themselves and get to know the patrons.

Approximately 15 minutes before curtain up, the live description begins with a recap of the synopsis, characters, costumes and sets, and to reveal the cast for the forthcoming performance. As the curtain rises, the live audio description begins, synchronising the words from the script with the choreography as the narrative unfolds.

Scottish Ballet ensures that all groups have appropriate and fair access to learning and development opportunities through the work of the Company as employees, audience members or participants.  The Company looks forward to continuing and developing the audio description series as part of its wider access and participation programme.
